
Doubting Thomas. Such a pejorative nickname for someone who approaches life in a what seems to me a wise and sensible way–critical thinking and independence combined with a certain open-mindedness. Thomas has always been one of my favourite biblical characters. I think of him as the patron saint of questioners and skeptics.
Yes, he does end up having a change of heart. But I hope–and like to imagine–that he always retained the sort of mind that would not accept anything too easily, but was also flexible and open to being surprised.
