It was an honour and a privilege to be invited to take part in a conversation about parenting in a time of climate change and crisis, hosted by Derrick Weston of Creation Justice Ministries.
I was there to talk about the genesis and purpose of my picture book Here: The Dot We Call Home (Paraclete Press). Joining me was Wilson Dickinson, theologian, minister, community organizer, father, and author of Singing the Psalms with My Son: Praying and Parenting for a Healed Planet (Cascade Books).
We spoke about our books and how they were inspired by the children and young people in our own lives, but also about the role of storytelling in cultivating empathy, inspiring action, and fostering a deeper connection with creation.
I’ve had the pleasure of talking with Derrick before on the Food & Faith Podcast, but this was the first time I have met or spoken with Wilson, and I really appreciated his combination of keen insight, humour, and empathy. Reading his book has prompted me to delve into the psalms with fresh eyes and new questions about what these ancient songs and poems might have to say to us in this time of crisis.
